Bike theft prevention

There has been a rise in reported bike theft in your local area. Below is some advice on how to prevent becoming a victim of bicycle crime.

  • If you don't have one already, we suggest you purchase a D-lock. Your local bike shop can advise on purchasing a good quality lock.
  • Using two locks will slow the thieves down and will make your bike less of a target visually.
  • Lock the frame and both wheels to a secure cycle stand.
  • Secure your bike as close to the stand as possible to give any thieves little or no room to manoeuvre.
  • Take parts that are easy to remove with you, such as wheels, lights, etc.
  • If possible, lock your bike at a secure cycle rack. It should be well lit and covered by CCTV.
  • Register your bike frame number for free on bikeregister.com  If your bike is ever stolen and recovered by the police, it can be traced back to you. The frame number is usually found underneath the bike between the pedals or where the back wheel slots in.
  • Get your bike security marked - it’s a visible deterrent to bike thieves.
  • Bike marking events will be offered during some community engagements Please check with your local neighbourhood policing team for dates by clicking on this link: www.dorset.police.uk
