Crime Prevention - Keyless Car Thefts

Weymouth Neighbourhood Policing Team have seen an increase in reports of keyless car thefts and attempt thefts. Cars with keyless entry unlock automatically when the key comes within a short distance of the car.  Offenders only need to be within a few metres of your car key to capture the signal, even if it’s inside your home. This means that even if your car and home are secure, the offenders can still unlock, start and steal your car.  It can take less than two minutes for offenders to gain full access to your vehicle. Your vehicle is most vulnerable overnight, particularly if parked on your driveway or directly outside your home where most of these thefts occurs.

Here are some tips on how to protect your vehicle;

When at home keep your car key (and the spare) well away from the car.
Put the keys in a screened or signal-blocking pouch, such as a Faraday Bag and check if the bag or pouch is still working every few months.
Turn off wireless signals on your fob when it's not being used.
Additional physical security such as locks and immobilisers are still highly recommended.

We also recommend removing all valuables from your vehicle, park in well-lit areas that can be covered by CCTV. If you have a private driveway, consider security lights and doorbell cameras.

If you need to report a theft from/of your vehicle, please contact us on 101.
