Dogs in Hot Weather

During this period of very hot weather Sherborne Neighbourhood Policing Team would like to remind dog owners not to leave their dog in a car or walk their dog on hot pavements. Even with car windows partly wound down your dog can suffer from heatstroke and die. Also, walking your dog on hot pavements can easily burn their paws.

If you are undecided that the pavement is too hot for your dog to walk on use the seven second rule.

Place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it’s too painful for your hand, then it’s too painful for your dog’s paws.

When walking on a hot day, if you notice your dog looks uncomfortable, or is limping or whimpering check your dog’s paws. If they appear red, swollen or blistered, take your dog off the hot pavement and place their dog’s paws under cool, gently running water as soon as possible. Then contact your vet.
