Dear Resident,
Dorset Police is urging parents, carers and guardians to speak to their children about the dangers of urban exploring, following an increase in reports across parts of the county.
Urban exploring, sometimes known as "urbexing", is a growing trend that sees young people entering abandoned buildings, empty properties and derelict sites, often filming their activities and sharing them on social media.
While it may appear adventurous or exciting, the reality is very different.
🏚️ Abandoned buildings can be structurally unsafe ⚠️ Floors, roofs and staircases can collapse without warning 🚑 Serious or life-changing injuries can occur in seconds 🚔 Entering private property without permission is illegal and can lead to criminal offences being committed
To highlight these dangers, Dorset Police has produced a new video aimed at parents, carers and guardians. The video demonstrates the devastating consequences that can result from urban exploring and includes real examples of young people putting themselves at risk.
Police Constable Dominic Frost of Bournemouth Police said:
We would urge people not to put themselves in danger by engaging in this type of activity.
Sadly, while such activities may be seen as amusing or thrill-seeking, they can end in tragedy and I would urge those involved to stop before somebody is seriously injured or killed.
It is not only dangerous but illegal to trespass on private property and could lead to life-changing consequences for those who choose to do so.
Through this new video, we are asking parents and guardians to play their part by ensuring they know where their children are at all times.
So please, take a few minutes today to talk to your children about the dangers of urban exploring. You could help prevent that knock at the door that every parent dreads.

We are asking all parents, carers and guardians to take a few moments to watch the video and have a conversation with their children about the risks. A simple discussion today could prevent a serious incident tomorrow.
If you have information about urban exploring or suspicious activity at vacant properties, please contact Dorset Police online at www.dorset.police.uk/contact or call 101.
Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers by visiting www.crimestoppers-uk.org or calling 0800 555 111.
Thank you for helping us keep Dorset's young people safe. | ||
